TRIP TO GABIKOPE ISLAND

I welcome you back to my blog and if you are reading this before the new year then a merry Christmas to you!! This trip in particular was an impromptu one, but hey! whenever a new adventure calls you answer. Around 8am in the morning a good friend of mine informed me that there was a trip being organized to Gabikope island and that the ferry which was to transport us to the island would be leaving at 12:30pm. Quickly I got into the kitchen and whipped something up for the trip ahead. I got to the riverbank at 11am and by 12:40 the ferry set off to Gabikope.

The trip on the ferry to the island wasn't dull either, there was a "Jama" group aboard the ferry that trilled us to many Jama songs. For those who do not know "Jama" it's a group of local songs that are satirical in nature and have an upbeat tempo on percussion instruments. From time-to-time songs were also played by the Dj aboard the ferry.

Upon reaching Gabikope the first thing you notice by the riverbanks are fishing canoes, implying that the island is inhabited by fishing folk. It wasn't a bad place to set up and have a little picnic, and from speaking to the organizers, the reason behind the event was to bring people from the mainland to the island once a year to have fun and socialize.

That was all, a perfect picnic island with welcoming people.
