TRIP TO GABIKOPE ISLAND

I welcome you back to my blog and if you are reading this before the new year then a merry Christmas to you!! This trip in particular was an impromptu one, but hey! whenever a new adventure calls you answer. Around 8am in the morning a good friend of mine informed me that there was a trip being organized to Gabikope island and that the ferry which was to transport us to the island would be leaving at 12:30pm. Quickly I got into the kitchen and whipped something up for the trip ahead. I got to the riverbank at 11am and by 12:40 the ferry set off to Gabikope.

The trip on the ferry to the island wasn't dull either, there was a "Jama" group aboard the ferry that trilled us to many Jama songs. For those who do not know "Jama" it's a group of local songs that are satirical in nature and have an upbeat tempo on percussion instruments. From time-to-time songs were also played by the Dj aboard the ferry.

Upon reaching Gabikope the first thing you notice by the riverbanks are fishing canoes, implying that the island is inhabited by fishing folk. It wasn't a bad place to set up and have a little picnic, and from speaking to the organizers, the reason behind the event was to bring people from the mainland to the island once a year to have fun and socialize.

That was all, a perfect picnic island with welcoming people.

TRIP TO AMEDZOPE IN THE VOLTA REGION

canopy walkway
Amedzope is a town on a mountain, mount Gemi which is not far from Amedzope is acknowledged as the highest point in Ghana. The roads that lead to Amedzope are very decent and motorable, I didn't encounter any bad roads till I got to the main entrance of the tourist site.  The locals in the town were quite welcoming and very helpful, they advised us to park our cars and walk the remaining 1.5km to the canopy walkway since the road was very bad. We were lucky enough to get offered a ride by a pick up-truck 400meters towards our destination. I for one was more than excited, damn was I tired!!

On arriving we were welcomed by a woman at the reception who asked us to make ourselves comfortable whiles one member in our group went to make payment for our tickets. As at the time of writing this post, the tourist site was running a promotion and so it couldn't be confirmed that the prices stated would be the same the following year, I however took the liberty of placing the price list in the post just in case you were wondering how much it would cost. .

We then made our way to the to the canopy walkway which was about 700meters from the reception. Notable on the route was a 256 steps into the valley where the water fall and canopy was. located. It was a piece of cake going down but not all that fun coming back up, it was war!

On reaching the canopy walkway my legs were still wobbly from climbing down the steps so I had to wait for like 20mins to feel my legs again. The canopy walkway was about 200meters from start to finish. After completing the canopy route I then descended into the valley where the water fall poured into to take some pictures 😋

Then came the long climb back up to the reception where we had lunch. They don't sell food here so it's best to prepare a little something to bring along. They only sell bottled water and soda drinks but no food. After lunch we walked a distance of 1.5km back to the main starting point, unfortunately, this time around there was no free pick up truck to convey us. It was fun walking back though and I really enjoyed every part of the trip.
